High School Musical (2006) – Disney

Happy 10th Anniversary to the television movie that changed Disney Channel!!

Basic Summary – Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), the star athlete at a small-town high school, falls for nerdy beauty Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) at a holiday karaoke party. When they return to campus, Troy and Gabriella audition for the upcoming school musical. Meanwhile, the jealous Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) conspires to squelch their chances. The two must struggle to make it to auditions while also meeting their existing obligations to the basketball team and the academic decathlon.

It’s weird to think when I first saw this on television. I feel extremely old now knowing that this was 10 years ago. The storyline is still relatable to this day about not just fitting in, but standing out and doing what makes you feel like you.

The cast’s chemistry is so strong in this movie. You can tell that they are trying to be their characters who themselves are complicated. As most high schoolers are, but eventually they find their ways. Also example of how strong this cast is, they just had their 10 year anniversary on Disney Channel today (which I didn’t get to see because I don’t get Disney Channel here at college – failure on my school’s part). But what I could tell from various social media outlets, it was amazing.

Do I have any problems with this film – I don’t think I do. Yes it is cheesy, but it works with it (Do I even need to mention how cheesy the title is?). The songs, though sometimes random, work and blend well with the story at the moment.

Honestly, if you haven’t seen this film – where have you been for the last 10 years? There is literally an empire based off this and various people still sing the songs today. You could probably find it anywhere at this point.
