The Babadook (2014) – 3 stars out of 5

Basic Summary – A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

I don’t really know how to feel about this film. I mean it’s alright but man. I have so many questions left about this film…I don’t if that was the point or not. This unrated film was pretty interesting to watch and pretty terrifying. It is kinda of a slow-ish start, but it doesn’t waste time getting to the creepy storybook. Which in itself is well set up and terrifying for a children’s book. They did that right.

I’m grateful that this film doesn’t go to jump scares. It uses genunie horror tactics to get the audience freaked out about the Babadook. Which I applaud. That thing was scary as heck. You really only get to see its face once but it is a quick glance like 3 seconds. Good job there.

The actors are alright. The mom and son were pretty good. Not amazing. Not horrible either. The side characters didn’t really work. Some story arches were left unsolved, but again, so many question left after this film.

Is it worth the time – It’s worth it for a quick film, but I wouldn’t go out looking for it in stores

Where to find it – It’s on Netflix for I don’t know how long.
